Like/ As

In English you can find many different words with the same meaning in Portuguese but different use in English. When you think about the word "like", for instance, you first translate it as the verb "to like" which in Portuguese means " gostar". But today we are gonna learn another meaning for this word. By the other hand , we learnt the word "as" in the comparative of equality, and here we'll see another meaning of this word. Are you ready? Let's keep the ball rolling!

Like/As

Both like and as means "como" in Portuguese.

When you want to say that somebody or something looks similar in comparison with other person or thing , you must use "like". You better know that it's only a comparison , but they are not the same .

*** My brother eats like a pig.

***Meu irmão come como um porco.

@@My brother is not a pig but he eats like a pig.

***You are like a sister to me.

***Você è como uma irmã pra mim.

@@You are not my sister but I feel you are

When I use "as" I'm affirming that I really am , I really do what I'm saying.

***We are here as JB's students.

***Estamos aqui como alunos do JB.

@@You all certainly are my students.

***My father works as an engineer.

***Meu pai trabalha como engenheiro.

@@Your father is an engineer.
