O estudo dos false friends requer muita dedicação e atenção e além disso, ele se torna essencial para aqueles que não querem cometer gafes. Por isso estamos estudando apenas 8 por semana, para que vocês tenham tempo de assimilar os verbos e palavras e utilizarem em suas frases e conversações. Apesar disso , tenho observado que poucos estão de fato dando importãncia ao estudo dos false friends. Por esse motivo , dessa vez farei o sentido inverso. Ao invés de dar a frase montada em inglês para que vocês traduzam , decidi dar a frase em Português para que , utilizando os false friends, vocês coloquem em inglês. Remarks of President-Elect Barack Obama-as prepared for deliveryElection NightTuesday, November 4th, 2008Chicago, Illinois If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer. It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference. It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled - Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America. It's the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day. It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America. I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain. He fought long and hard in this campaign, and he's fought even longer and harder for the country he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine, and we are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. Thank you. Thank you, my friends. Thank you for coming here on this beautiful Arizona evening.
My friends, we have -- we have come to the end of a long journey. The American people have spoken, and they have spoken clearly. A little while ago, I had the honor of calling Senator Barack Obama to congratulate him on being elected the next president of the country that we both love.
In a contest as long and difficult as this campaign has been, his success alone commands my respect for his ability and perseverance. But that he managed to do so by inspiring the hopes of so many millions of Americans who had once wrongly believed that they had little at stake or little influence in the election of an American president is something I deeply admire and commend him for achieving.
This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight.
I've always believed that America offers opportunities to all who have the industry and will to seize it. Senator Obama believes that, too. But we both recognize that though we have come a long way from the old injustices that once stained our nation's reputation and denied some Americans the full blessings of American citizenship, the memory of them still had the power to wound.
A century ago, President Theodore Roosevelt's invitation of Booker T. Washington to dine at the White House was taken as an outrage in many quarters. America today is a world away from the cruel and prideful bigotry of that time. There is no better evidence of this than the election of an African American to the presidency of the United States. Let there be no reason now for any American to fail to cherish their citizenship in this, the greatest nation on Earth.
Senator Obama has achieved a great thing for himself and for his country. I applaud him for it, and offer in my sincere sympathy that his beloved grandmother did not live to see this day, though our faith assures us she is at rest in the presence of her creator and so very proud of the good man she helped raise.
Senator Obama and I have had and argued our differences, and he has prevailed. No doubt many of those differences remain. These are difficult times for our country, and I pledge to him tonight to do all in my power to help him lead us through the many challenges we face.
I urge all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him, but offering our next president our good will and earnest effort to find ways to come together, to find the necessary compromises, to bridge our differences, and help restore our prosperity, defend our security in a dangerous world, and leave our children and grandchildren a stronger, better country than we inherited.
Whatever our differences, we are fellow Americans. And please believe me when I say no association has ever meant more to me than that.
It is natural tonight to feel some disappointment, but tomorrow we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again. We fought as hard as we could.
And though we fell short, the failure is mine, not yours.
I am so deeply grateful to all of you for the great honor of your support and for all you have done for me. I wish the outcome had been different, my friends. The road was a difficult one from the outset. But your support and friendship never wavered. I cannot adequately express how deeply indebted I am to you.
I am especially grateful to my wife, Cindy, my children, my dear mother and all my family and to the many old and dear friends who have stood by my side through the many ups and downs of this long campaign. I have always been a fortunate man, and never more so for the love and encouragement you have given me.
You know, campaigns are often harder on a candidate's family than on the candidate, and that's been true in this campaign. All I can offer in compensation is my love and gratitude, and the promise of more peaceful years ahead.
I am also, of course, very thankful to Governor Sarah Palin, one of the best campaigners I have ever seen and an impressive new voice in our party for reform and the principles that have always been our greatest strength. Her husband Todd and their five beautiful children with their tireless dedication to our cause, and the courage and grace they showed in the rough-and-tumble of a presidential campaign. We can all look forward with great interest to her future service to Alaska, the Republican Party and our country.
To all my campaign comrades, from Rick Davis and Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter, to every last volunteer who fought so hard and valiantly month after month in what at times seemed to be the most challenged campaign in modern times, thank you so much. A lost election will never mean more to me than the privilege of your faith and friendship.
I don't know what more we could have done to try to win this election. I'll leave that to others to determine. Every candidate makes mistakes, and I'm sure I made my share of them. But I won't spend a moment of the future regretting what might have been.
This campaign was and will remain the great honor of my life. And my heart is filled with nothing but gratitude for the experience and to the American people for giving me a fair hearing before deciding that Senator Obama and my old friend Senator Joe Biden should have the honor of leading us for the next four years.
I would not be an American worthy of the name, should I regret a fate that has allowed me the extraordinary privilege of serving this country for a half a century. Today, I was a candidate for the highest office in the country I love so much. And tonight, I remain her servant. That is blessing enough for anyone and I thank the people of Arizona for it.
Tonight, more than any night, I hold in my heart nothing but love for this country and for all its citizens, whether they supported me or Senator Obama, I wish Godspeed to the man who was my former opponent and will be my president.
And I call on all Americans, as I have often in this campaign, to not despair of our present difficulties but to believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here.
Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history, we make history.

What are we fighting for? By John McCain

The presidential election occurs at a pivotal moment. Our nation is fighting two wars abroad, suffers from the greatest global financial crisis since the Great Depression, and is facing a painful recession. I believe in the greatness of America. I believe in our capacity to prosper, and to be safer and remain a beacon of light on the global stage. But we cannot spend the next four years as we have spent much of the last eight: waiting for our luck to change. We have to act immediately. We have to fight for it.

The institutions that we counted on -- Wall Street banks, our elected leaders in Washington -- failed us. We must reverse the corruption and arrogance that have overtaken these institutions, and we must place our trust in the hands of those who have never let us down, especially the American family and small businesses.

We need to grow our small businesses, not tax them. I will fight the Democrats' plans to redistribute the fruit of America's labor and turn our economy into a full-fledged disaster. I will cut taxes on families, seniors, savers and businesses. We need to double the child deduction, cut the capital gains tax, and keep jobs in America with a lower business tax.

I will make government finally live on a budget and enforce that discipline by the power of veto. I won't spend nearly a trillion dollars more of your money. I will impose a short-term spending freeze and rid the government of waste, duplication and fraud. And I will chart a different course than the administration and Barack Obama and not spend your money just to bail out Wall Street bankers and brokers. I have a plan to protect the value of homes and get them rising again by refinancing mortgages so your neighbor won't default and further drag down the value of your house.

I will end three decades of failed energy policies; stop sending $700 billion to countries that oppose American values and finance our enemies; and drill for oil and natural gas. We must strengthen incentives for all energy alternatives -- nuclear, clean coal, wind, solar and tide. We will encourage the manufacture of hybrid, flex fuel and electric automobiles. We will lower the cost of energy, and create millions of new jobs.

I will not impose "one size fits all" health care on families and small businesses through expensive mandates and fines. I will bring down the skyrocketing cost of health care with competition and choice, reform the insurance market to be fair, and allow you to keep the same health plan if you change jobs or choose to stay home.

One in five jobs in the U.S. depends on trade and I will fight the threat to those jobs from Democrat plans for isolationism. I won't make it harder to sell our goods overseas and kill more jobs. I will open new markets to goods made in America and make sure our trade is free and fair. And I'll make sure we help workers who've lost a job that won't come back find a new one that won't go away.

Senator Obama wants to raise taxes and restrict trade. The last time America did that in a bad economy it led to the Great Depression.

While most Americans are rightly concerned with the economic crisis, a world of pressing national security challenges also awaits the next president.

The gains our troops have made in the past 18 months in Iraq could be lost if we pull our troops out prematurely and regardless of the conditions on the ground. We have also dealt devastating blows to al Qaeda, especially in Iraq, but terrorists have found sanctuary on the Pakistan frontier among those trying to topple governments in both Kabul and Islamabad.

Afghanistan is reaching a crisis point, just as Iraq did in 2006. As an early supporter of the surge strategy in Iraq, I know that turning around this situation will require more than just increased troop levels. We also need a new, comprehensive strategy, one that integrates civil and military efforts and engages with various Afghan tribes.

Other major threats loom on the horizon: the Iranian and North Korean nuclear programs; aggressive Russian behavior toward its neighbors; Venezuelan adventurism; genocide in Darfur; and global warming. And those are only the dangers that we know of. Just as few expected the Russians to invade Georgia, we remain unaware of precisely where our next crisis will erupt, or when. The only certainty is that, as Joe Biden guaranteed, the tests facing the next president will be more severe if he is seen as weak in national security leadership.

I have devoted my life to safeguarding America. Former Secretary of State George Shultz compares diplomacy to tending a garden -- if you want to see relationships flourish, you have to tend them. I have done that, by traveling the world and establishing ties with everyone from dissidents to heads of state. There is great need for American leadership in the world, and I understand that only by exercising that leadership with grace and wisdom can we be successful in safeguarding our interests.

When I am president, I will not offer up unconditional summit meetings with dangerous dictators, nor will I foreclose diplomatic tools that serve our interests. I will respect our trade agreements with our allies, not unilaterally renounce them. I will close the Guantanamo Bay prison and ban torture. I will expand our armed forces and transform our civil and military agencies to win the struggle against violent Islamic extremism.

I believe that America is an exceptional country, one that demands exceptional leadership. After the difficulties of the last eight years, Americans are hungry for change and they deserve it. My career has been dedicated to the security and prosperity of America and that of every nation that seeks to live in freedom. It's time to get our country, and our world, back on track.

Early Years
Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4th, 1961. His father, Barack Obama Sr., was born and raised in a small village in Kenya, where he grew up herding goats with his own father, who was a domestic servant to the British.

Third Conditional

Na terceira condicional usamos o passado perfeito e o futuro do passado perfeito. Lembra se do tempo perfeito? É aquele formado pelo auxiliar HAVE + o Participio passado do verbo principal. Observe novamente as frases . Dessa vez colocarei a mesma frase nas três condicionais possíveis. Observe as alteraçõesa de acordo com os auxiliares e tempos verbais:


**1-condicional> We will improve our English , if we study twice a week.


**2-condicional>We would improve our English, if we studied twice a week.


**3-condicional>We would have improved our English, if we had studied twice a week.



###Observe que no passado perfeito o auxiliar HAVE passou a ser usado como HAD, exatamente por se tratar de passado. Mas o verbo principal continuou no passado participio


Observem esse exemplo:


**If I have money , I will buy a car for you.

**If I had money , I would buy a car for you.

**If I had had money, I would have bought a car for you.


###Esse é um raro caso onde o passado é colocado duas vezes na mesma frase , e lado a lado. O que nos leva a pensar que algo está errado, mas não está. Vamos analisar com bastante calma. O auxiliar para o tempo perfeito é HAVE, certo? Se a frase está no passado então o auxiliar também vai para o passado , certo? E o passado de Have é Had. Assim na terceira condicional o primeiro HAD se refere ao passado do auxiliar Have. E o segundo Had? Esse , por sua vez , se refere ao passado participio do verbo Have que tambem é HAD.


###A terceira condicional é facilmente identificada por ter duas formas de passado na mesma frase. HAD , que é passado do auxiliar HAVE , e o passado participio do verbo principal.


###A terceira condicional tambem é a única representada pela forma WOULD HAVE. E depois do would have sempre vem o verbo principal no passado particípio.


###Para identificar os verbos numa lista de verbos , basta seguir essa ordem: A primeira fileira será sempre do verbo no infinitivo , e quase sempre o verbo vem acompanhado da partícula "to", que identifica o infinitivo. O infinitivo é usado na primeira condicional pois representa o tempo presente. A frase da primeira condicional tem seu futuro com WILL. Porém na frase condicional não podemos usar o "to". Se a frase estiver na terceira pessoa , obedecemos a regra e acrescentamos o "s" ao verbo.

**If I speak again, He will understand./ Se eu falar de novo, ele entenderá.

**If she speaks again, I will understand./ Se ela falar novamente, eu entenderei.

###Na segunda fileira da lista de verbos encontramos o passado simples. Dessa vez o verbo vem sem a particula "to" porque ele já está no passado. Frases no passado simples são representadas pela segunda condicional. No passado não é necessário acrescentar "s" na terceira pessoa. A frase da segunda condicional tem seu futuro com Would.


**Would you help me , If I paid you?/ Vc me ajudaria , se eu te pagasse?

**She wouldn't understand you, if you didn't repeat everything again./ Ela não te entenderia , se vc não repetisse tudo de novo.


###A terceira fileira dos verbos geralmente indica o verbo no tempo continuous(ing). É possivel fazer frases condicionais com o tempo continuous. Observe:


**If I were travelling, I wouldn't be here./Se eu estivesse viajando , eu não estaria aqui.

**If she is studying, I won't talk to her./ Se ela estiver estudando , eu não falarei com ela.



### Na quarta e última fileira dos verbos, encontramos o passado particípio, que é usado na terceira condicional seguido pelo futuro do passado perfeito.( would have + participio). Em Português o particípio é representado pelas partículas ( ado, ido). Sonhado, partido, amado, sofrido, ...etc.


***If I had dreamed with her, I would have awoken happier/ Se eu tivesse sonhado com ela, eu teria acordado mais feliz.


***If Aurelina had given up/ She wouldn't have learned about the conditionals./Se Aurelina tivesse desistido, ela não teria aprendido sobre as condicionais.

###Mesmo sabendo que a conjugação correta da terceira pessoa do passado é WAS, não podemos dizer "if she was" devemos sim dizer"if she were". Mas essa mudança é apenas na segunda condicional.

Como já foi dito antes, existem no idioma americano três estruturas para frases condicionais. Vamos começar aprendendo a primeira condicional. Ela é formada pelos tempos presente simples e futuro simples. Em todas as frases condicionais aparecem a palavrinha IF que significa SE. Observe as frases abaixo e veja como funciona a estrutura da primeira condicional:

**If she is smarter, she will invite me to have lunch with her.

###Uma frase condicional é dividida em duas partes separadas por vírgula.

Conditional sentences - Tempos verbais

Uma frase condicional , como o próprio nome diz, indica uma ação que motiva uma outra ação. Eu te ensinarei SE você prestar atenção. Caso você não preste atenção eu não te ensinarei. Observe que as duas ações (ensinar/ prestar atenção) estão separadas pela palavra SE, e cada uma está em um tempo verbal diferente. Uma (ensinarei) está no tempo futuro simples e a outra ( prestar atenção) está no tempo presente simples. Essa é a primeira condicional. Em inglês , assim como no Português, existem três condicionais. Vamos aprender passo a passo cada uma delas. Mas antes vamos revisar os tempos verbais que usamos para formar as frases condicionais.


Simple present/presente simples

***O presente simples é usado na primeira condicional e indica que a ação está no presente. Na relação de verbos que o Israel preparou pra vocês o presente simples está na primeira fileira.E o primeiro verbo dessa lista é ESTUDAR. Vamos então conjugar o verbo estudar no presente simples:

***I study/you study/she studies/he studies/it studies/we study/you study/they study.



Simple future/futuro simples



***O futuro simples é formado com o auxiliar WILL. Esse auxiliar colocado á frente do pronome em frases afirmativas , transporta a frase do presente para o futuro. Ainda utilizando o verbo ESTUDAR como exemplo vamos conjugar o verbo no futuro simples:


***I will study/you will study/she will study/it will study/we will study/you will study/they will study.




Simple Past/passado simples





***O passado simples é usado na segunda condicional e está , na lista do Israel, na fileira entitulada "past". Existem duas formas de passado simples, uma é formada com o final do verbo em ED , que chamamos de verbo regular e a outra, não obedece uma regra para o passado , e chamamos de verbo irregular. O verbo ESTUDAR é um verbo regular. Mas vamos conjugar um verbo que está na lista que é irregular. O verbo ENSINAR. No presente ele é TEACH, mas no passado é TAUGHT:



***I taught/you taught/he taught/she taught/it taught/we taught/you taught/they taught.





Future in the past/futuro do passado



***O futuro do passado é representado pelo auxiliar WOULD. Assim como WILL coloca a frase do presente para o futuro simples, WOULD coloca a frase do passado para o futuro do pretérito ou passado , como queiram. Asiim o verbo MORAR com would fica MORARIA. Vamos conjugar o verbo MORAR no futuro do passado.

Past Perfect/passado perfeito



***O tempo perfeito é formado pelo auxiliar HAVE mas o PARTICÍPIO PASSADO do verbo principal. No presente SIMPLES , por exemplo do verbo FALAR, eu digo I SPEAK, já no presente perfeito eu digo I HAVE SPOKEN. O particípio dos verbos está na última fileira da famosa lista do Israel. Para formarmos o passado perfeito , o auxiliar HAVE vai para o passado e fica HAD e o verbo principal continua no particípio. Vejamos , por exemplo, como fica o verbo DORMIR conjugado no passado perfeito.:





***I had slept/you had slept/he had slept/she had slept/it had slept/ we had slept / you had slept/they had slept.





Future in the past perfect/futuro do passado perfeito



***O futuro do passado perfeito é formado pela combinação WOULD HAVE + O VERBO PRINCIPAL NO PASSADO PARTICÍPIO. * O passado perfeito é tão simples de entender quanto o presente. Ao invés de have utilizamos Had , que é o passado de have. Porém continuamos a usar o particípio do verbo principal. Observem as frases no presente simples e nos tempos presente e passado perfeito.

Entre parenteses está o verbo e o particípio dele, para ajudar na compreensão.

Present perfect

**Finalmente chegamos ao estudo de uma das mais importantes  gramáticas da Lingua Inglesa. Importante  porque , em muitos casos, o tempo presente perfeito pode representar uma ação do passado que ainda continua no presente. Já em outros casos representa uma ação apenas do presente. Quando eu digo " Eu pensei em você", essa frase está no passado simples. Quer dizer que pensei, mas não penso mais. Porém se eu digo " Eu tenho pensado em você", fica bem claro que continuo pensando, ou seja, eu penso em você.


**Nós já aprendemos que para elaborar frases no tempo presente usamos o auxiliar "do".

**Aprendemos também que para o passado o auxiliar é "did".

**Não custa lembrar que o futuro é auxiliado por "will"

**O futuro do passado recebe a ajuda do "would"

E o tempo perfeito? Qual é o auxiliar?

****O auxiliar para o tempo perfeito é "Have".

* O verbo have significa "ter"e é um verbo auxiliar. Eu posso perguntar :

*Do you have time? ou Have you got time?

*Do you have brother? ou Have you got brother?


**Por esse motivo o verbo "have " é tão importante. Ele é usado para auxiliar o tempo perfeito. Mas além do verbo have , o tempo perfeito é formado pelo passado particípio do verbo principal. Se eu quero dizer "Eu tenho amado meus filhos" ...o "amado" é o particípio. Portanto o particípio segue sempre a terminação em português ( ado, edo, ido).  Vamos ver como algumas frases passam do presente simples para o presente perfeito. Observem:

@@Como podemos notar o primeiro "the more" significa " o quanto mais". E o segundo significa "mais". O exercício abaixo irá ajudá-los a fixar melhor essa gramática. É só seguir o exemplo:

False friends - parece mas não é - introdução

Ao estudarmos Inglês devemos prestar muita atenção com os cognatos...alguns nos levam a achar que determinada palavra ou verbo significa algo , quando na verdade a tradução é completamente diferente. São palavras que parecem muito com alguma que conhecemos em Português...mas apenas parecem. Quantos de nós já pensou que "parents" significava "parentes" e que "college" era colégio ?.E o que dizer do verbo "to pretend"? Aposto que você tinha quase certeza que se tratava de " pretender", porém seu significado é fingir...porque "pretender " na verdade é "to intend" , que nada tem a ver com "entender", pois entender é "to understand", entendeu? Nem eu, kkkk. Na minha carreira como professor de Inglês, já vi muitos colegas professores cairem na armadilha dos falsos cognatos e não posso mentir que eu também já fui e ainda serei vítima desses "falsos amigos". Certa vez , em uma apostila para um curso pré - vestibular, escrevi a seguinte frase : " I pretend to be your best teacher ever...you just need to believe in it". Minha intenção era dizer " Eu pretendo ser o melhor professor que voces tiveram...basta que acreditem nisso". Mas usei o verbo "pretend" que significa fingir...e a frase ficou totalmente estranha. O único meio de não cairmos nessas armadilhas é estudarmos os "false friends" e mesmo assim ainda estaremos em risco.


A DAY AT WORK
In the morning I attended a meeting between management and union representatives. The discussion was very comprehensive, covering topics like working hours, days off, retirement age, etc. Both sides were interested in an agreement and ready to compromise. The secretary recorded everything in the notes. Eventually, they decided to set a new meeting to sign the final draft of the agreement.
Back at the office, a colleague of mine asked me if I had realized that the proposed agreement would be partially against the company policy not to accept workers that have already retired. I pretended to be really busy and late for an appointment, and left for the cafeteria. Actually, I didn't want to discuss the matter at that particular moment because there were some strangers in the office.
After lunch I attended a lecture given by the mayor, who is an expert in tax legislation and has a graduate degree in political science. He said his government intends to assist welfare programs and senior citizens, raise funds to improve college education and build a public library, and establish tougher limits on vehicle emissions because he assumes this is what the people expect from the government.
